Among the many celebrities who once frequented Palazzo De Gregorio, in addition to Richard Wagner, Admiral Nelson and the composer Pietro Ferro, there was also Pietro Mascagni, a great friend of Princess Giovanna San Martino De Gregorio. Now, Mascagni had a deep passion for 'siccagni' tomatoes, tomatoes that due to the particular conditions of the climate do not require irrigation. It so happened that one day he turned up unannounced and asked for his favourite tomatoes, tomatoes that unfortunately were not at home at the time. The princess, however, did not lose heart and since hospitality is sacred, she sent one of her servants to the Borgo to buy them and served them to the master as if they had "just been picked from their fields". Needless to say, the capricious Mascagni did not notice anything.
