Devil’s Bridge – An artefact shrouded in legend

The Devil's Bridge is one of the symbols of Cividale del Friuli, a stone structure suspended over the Natisone River and shrouded in legend. Popular imagination has linked the construction of the work to the supernatural, giving rise to the demonic legend, spread in countless versions, according to which the devil would have facilitated the construction of the bridge in exchange for the soul of the first person to cross it. The devil's mother was called upon to build it in the space of one night, carrying the imposing central rock in her apron. The people of Cividale, however, played devil's advocate by having an animal, a dog or a cat depending on the version.
