Devil’s stone –

0
Near number 41, Via Santa Croce, there is the curious 'pietra indiavolata'. It is a stone, placed as the threshold of a window, which no matter how many efforts have been made, has always curved upwards. It was useless to change the stone, just as it was useless to fix it with clips and hooks: it always came back to change. The reason? Legend has it that the devil persuaded Mr and Mrs Bernardini to build an imperial palace on the site of a miraculous image of the Madonna, which was particularly venerated in the town. The image was thus destroyed to make way for the building, but, right where it once stood, the stone curved and has remained curved to this day.
