Diana’s Fountain – Alphaeus and Arethusa
The Diana Fountain occupies the central area of Piazza Archimede and tells the story of the nymph Arethusa who escapes from Alphaeus under the protection of the goddess Diana. It dates from 1906 and is the work of the sculptor Giulio Moschetti, who created the fountain at the invitation of some Syracusan notables. The fountain faces south and highlights the figure of Diana, the goddess of hunting, armed with a bow and quiver. At her feet is Arethusa, stretching as she is being transformed into a fountain, and the man Alphaeus, astonished at what is happening to his beloved.
