Diocesan Museum – Paintings, sculptures and sacred paraments

0
The courtyard of the Archbishop's Palace leads through the 16th-century portico to the Diocesan Museum of Spoleto, housed in the main floor wing of the building, known as the Appartamento del Cardinale. The vast collection of works of art, recognised by critics and scholars as one of the most interesting in central Italy, boasts notable paintings from the 13th to the 19th century, including works by Filippino Lippi, Domenico Beccafumi, Cavalier d'Arpino and Sebastiano Conca. The collection of sculptures presents a rich variety of styles and materials: from 13th century Romanesque wooden groups to Bernini's bronze Urban VIII and St Philip Neri, attributed to Algardi. There is also a remarkable collection of liturgical vestments, with artefacts dating from the 13th-14th centuries and collections of precious metal furnishings.
