Farnese Theatre – A debut among the waves

0
The Farnese Theatre was inaugurated on 21 December 1628, with a spectacular premiere in honour of Margaret de' Medici. About four thousand spectators were present for the great occasion: illustrious personalities from the Duchy of Parma, gentlemen, knights and ladies. And when Neptune conjured up the monsters of the abyss, a cascade of water burst from the proscenium, burst onto the stalls, submerged them, and seven sea creatures appeared out of nowhere. It is estimated that about 800 square metres of water were used, which rose to a height of one metre in an instant, only to disappear as quickly as it had appeared: a hydraulic prodigy, to the credit of engineer G.B. Aleotti.
