Foro Romano – The chasm of Marco Curzio
Inside Foro Romano there is "Lacus Curtius" ("Curtius' lake"), where Mezio Curzio probably jumped in in 393 B.C.. According to legend, a lightining fell down and created a chasm; both happening were interpreted as bad premonitions. The oracles were consulted and the solution was found: the most precious thing of the city should be thrown into the hole to placate the Gods and let the chasm disappear. The army was the most precious thing at that time so the Commander of Sabini jumped into the lake for the population sake. The exact marble stone where the man lost his life was found in recent time.
