Garibaldi Barrack – The lost convent
The lost church of the Franciscan Convent of San Francesco Grande was built in the 17th century where the present Garibaldi Barrack is located. It was the biggest church in Milan after Duomo and it hosted the famous painting "The Virgin of the Rocks" by Leonardo, preserved today at the National Gallery in London, and "Saint Francis receiving the Stigmata" by Borgognone, displayed at Diocesano Museum. Both the church and the monastery were completely demolished by the French government at the end of the 18th century.
