Giuseppe Verdi Municipal Theatre – The Singer and the Emperor

0
The Verdi Theatre was once the venue for important social occasions reserved for the city's nobility. In 1792, it hosted none other than Napoleon Bonaparte and his wife Josephine Beauharnais, who attended a performance by one of the most famous opera singers in the world at the time, Gaspare Pacchierotti. Pacchierotti, who had reached the end of his splendid career, was forced to give the concert in spite of his disdain for the Emperor, who was guilty of having suppressed the Serenissima, to which he was bound by patriotic feelings. However, he was not afraid to express his displeasure, which earned him a month's confinement.
