Greek Arsenal – The battleship Syracosia
The Greek arsenal of Syracuse is a part of the small port, known as Lakkios, where ships were manufactured and repaired in ancient times. The arsenal was built by Dionysius in 404 B.C. and was one of the largest in antiquity, with a capacity of over three hundred ships. Reliable historical information, although not completely confirmed, leads us to believe that the armoured ship 'Syracosia' was built in the shipyard to a design by Archimedes.
