House of Owls – Decorations, stucco, mosaics and unique stained glass windows

0
The Casina delle Civette (House of the Owls), home of Prince Giovanni Torlonia jr. until 1938, is the result of a series of transformations and additions made to the 19th-century Swiss Hut, which was originally a place of escape. From 1916, the building began to be known as the "Villino delle Civette" (Little House of the Owls) because of the stained-glass window with two stylised owls between ivy shoots, and the almost obsessive use of the owl theme in the decorations and furniture. Today, the interior is decorated with paintings, stucco, mosaics, polychrome majolica, inlaid wood, wrought iron, wall fabrics and marble sculptures. Among the many decorations, the presence of stained glass is so prevalent that it constitutes the distinctive feature of the building: the stained glass windows were all installed between 1908 and 1930 and constitute a 'unicum' in the international artistic panorama.
