Kindu War Memorial Chapel – The Kindu massacre
The 'fallen of Kindu' memorial chapel is a memorial located near the Pisa military airport to commemorate the Kindu massacre. In November 1961, thirteen Italian airmen on a humanitarian mission were killed in Kindu, Congo. The Ministry of Defence decided to build a memorial at the military airport in Pisa, from where the fleet involved in the massacre had departed. However, due to considerable financial difficulties, the 'monument' was reduced to a simple votive chapel, which required greater simplicity and adherence to liturgical requirements.
