Malvasia Palace – The stone mask

0
On the large archway leading off Via del Carro and flanking Palazzo Malvasia, one can see a mask with its mouth wide open. It used to be the custom for wealthy families to throw large quantities of food out of their windows to hungry crowds during feasts and receptions. The more food thrown, the greater the wealth shown by the family. It is said that the Malvasia family of Bologna had a conduit connected to wine barrels inserted in the mascherone: during the festivities, in addition to throwing food, this unique fountain was opened, from which wine was poured in abundance. It is not difficult to imagine the commotion that broke out under that balcony.
