Mangia Tower – A wasteful caretaker
The Torre del Mangia is the civic tower of the Palazzo Comunale. It is one of the tallest ancient towers in Italy (the third tallest, after the Torrazzo in Cremona and the Torre degli Asinelli in Bologna), reaching 88 metres at the height of the last battlements. According to a curious Sienese legend, the Tower owes its name to the first custodian who lived there, Giovanni di Balduccio, who was known for wasting the money he earned on food (he was called Mangiaguadagni).
