Mausoleum of Theodoric – An architectural mystery

0
The Mausoleum of Theodoric is the most famous funerary construction of the Ostrogoths. We do not know exactly when and by whom it was built, i.e. if it was built by Theodoric the Great himself while he was still alive (therefore before 526), or if his daughter Amalasunta built it after her father's death. The most striking feature of the building is the roof, which is formed by a single huge monolith in the shape of a dome. How the monolith was placed on top of the building is still unclear; two possible hypotheses are that it was raised on top of the building as it was built, or that the architects built a kind of dam, a 'pool', around the completed mausoleum and then transported the monolith to the top by raft.
