Modena Cathedral – A commander named Arthur

The door on the left-hand side of Modena Cathedral, which faces north, is called the Porta della Pescheria (Fish Market Door), so called because there was a fish market nearby. On the archivolt of the door is carved a passage from the legend of Arthur of Britain. But as can be seen, Arthur is not called King. This narrative embraces the theory of Arthur "dux bellorum" or "Comes Britanniarum", according to which Arthur was the Roman-British commander of Celtic troops who defended the borders of the Roman Empire and Britain from the invasions of the Saxons and Angles around 500 AD.
