Monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi – Legend of the lion

0
Giuseppe Garibaldi's monument depicts the hero in his usual garb, sporting the traditional cap, poncho and neckerchief. Contrasting with this mundane portrait, however, at his feet lies a ferocious lion. This symbol of courage was involved in a bizarre incident: the exact date is not known, but shortly after the monument's inauguration someone claimed to have seen Garibaldi's stone lion wave its tail. Most thought of a prank, but the "witness" was so insistent in his account that others went to have a look with their own eyes... and were shocked to find the beast's tail actually slowly shifting from side to side. The phenomenon became widely known, and the lion's legend produced legions of first-hand accounts, with an even more bizarre detail: apparently, the strange movements only took place between 10 and 11 AM.
