Monument to Salvo D’Acquisto – A civic tribute to the Deputy Brigadier
Salvo D'Acquisto was characterised by sensitivity and kindness. In fact, he used to stay close to his comrades who were mocked for their deformities or he used to help poor boys, to one of whom he had given his shoes to protect him from the cold. Following an explosion, two German soldiers died and two were wounded. The German armed forces rounded up 23 people in revenge. Deputy Brigadier D'Acquisto was not part of the round-up, but gave himself up voluntarily. Although innocent, he pleaded guilty to save the hostages who were about to be shot in reprisal. And he offered himself to the German guns. He was not even 23 years old. In November 1996, a stele dedicated to him, created by sculptor Francesco Lucidi, was placed on the roundabout of the same name. It is the city's tribute to the vice-brigadier.
