Monumental Cemetery – The land of Golgotha
The Campo Santo, also known as the Monumental Cemetery or the Old Cemetery, is a historic monumental cemetery in Pisa, which was started in 1277 by Giovanni di Simone, as recalled by the Latin inscription on the side of the right portal, although some people name it after Giovanni di Nicola. According to tradition, the occasion was given by the arrival of 'holy land' from Golgotha, brought by Pisan ships returning from the Fourth Crusade, at the behest of Archbishop Ubaldo Lanfranchi. However, such foundation legends are also widespread for other similar buildings throughout Europe.
