Museum of Computing Instruments – Unique examples of computer machines
The Museo degli Strumenti per il Calcolo displays the most significant pieces of a rich collection of machines related to the history of computing, unique in Italy and important at international level for the completeness and significance of the materials. The exhibition ranges from the arithmometers of the 19th century to the great calculators of the 1950s and 1960s, up to the most important products in the history of the Personal Computer. Unique examples such as the Calcolatrice Elettronica Pisana (1961), around which the first Italian school of computing was formed, and the CINAC of the Istituto di Applicazioni per il Calcolo in Rome (1964), to iconic machines such as the Olivetti ELEA 6001 (1961), whose design was supervised by Ettore Sottsass, and the Cray X-MP (1982), on which the first Pixar shorts were made.
