Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni – “Not to slumber”
Inside Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni, one can easily spot the eponymous family's crest: a circle enclosing three poppies, with the motto "Not to slumber". Legend has it that the family's founder, having caught wind of a precious shipment of wool from northern Europe, managed to get his hands on it with a cunning ruse: the night before the cargo's arrival, he offered his competitors a feast... accompanied by opium-laced wine. The following morning, as the other merchants were still knocked out by the opium's sleep-inducing effects, the crafty businessman had all the time he needed to buy the whole shipment, turning a huge profit. A good reason to be eternally thankful to the poppy flower, from which the helpful opium was extracted.
