Palazzo Scapucci – The “Tower of the Monkey”

Torre del Frangipane, also known as Torre della Scimmia ("Monkey's Tower") grew in popularity after the famous American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne published the book "The Marble Faun". Legend has it that a nobleman was living in the palace with a son and a monkey. One day, the monkey grabbed the kid and run on the top of the tower. A crowd gathered outside and the father desperately invoked Virgin Mary to help him: the monkey calmed down and put the child back on his bed. The episode was hailed as a miracle and from that day on, a lamp has been lighting up the tower.
