Piazza Carlo Emanuele II – “Carlina”

0
Charles Emmanuel II was not a lucky ruler, or at the very least not in matters of romance. He was first wed to Françoise Madeleine of Orléans, but a year later and with no heir in sight doubts began to arise concerning the Duke's virility, leading to detractors cruelly nicknaming him "Carlina" ("Charlotte"). Following his wife's death, in order to dispel such rumors, he promptly got Duchess Marie Jeanne Baptiste pregnant, only to go on to entertain a series of liaisons with courtesans. The Duchess, having caught him in the act in the Palace of Venaria, was swift in her revenge: right after Charles's (unrelated) death, her first act as regent was to remodel the plaza formerly known as "Wine square" and cruelly rename it "piazza Carlina".
