Piazza di San Giovanni in Laterano – The legend of the frog that run away
The story behind Piazza San Giovanni in Laterano hides an interesting legend of the Middle Ages. Nerone had an insane wish: he wanted to get pregnant and asked doctors to help him. In order to go along with his wish, they suggested him to swallow a tadpole, which grew in his stomach. Nerone "gave birth" to a frog through a purge. He was very happy and showed the frog to the population, going around the city on a gorgeous carriage with a nurturer and 15 Roman princes. However, when the carriage was passing by Tevere river, the frog jumped into the water and disappeared. Nerone was furious and ordered to kill the nurturer and the princes but they revolved against the emperor and killed him. Later, they build Laterano: the name comes from "latitans rana", that is, "escaped frog".
