The Torre del Soccorso (Rescue Tower) is a building that has collected a string of frightening names over the centuries, such as the Torre della Morte (Death Tower), Torre del Boia (Executioner's Tower) and Torre della Catena (Chain Tower). This ancient bulwark was built to facilitate cavalry sorties, and was originally bounded by two imposing parallel walls. Its last name is immediately explained: from here the chain was lowered to prevent unwanted boats from entering the city. As far as the other two names are concerned, that of 'Torre della Morte' (Tower of Death) derives from the state of neglect the building was in for a long time, arousing the imagination of the Paduans. As for the name 'Torre del Boia' (tower of the Executioner), it is said to derive from the legend that it was here that the Executioner lived.
