Royal Ditch – The legend of Modigliani

0
Livorno's Fosso Reale is a moat that originally followed the perimeter of the fortified city and later, with the demolition of the ramparts, definitively lost its defensive function. According to an old legend, Amedeo Modigliani, the famous Italian painter and sculptor, was discouraged by the unflattering opinions of his friends and threw some of his sculptures into the Fosso Reale, in the section between the Vettovaglie market and the Dutchmen's church. Over time, this tradition took hold to the extent that in the early 1980s, work began to search for them, and in fact three heads were found. Initially they were attributed to the master, but they soon turned out to be blatant forgeries.
