San Benedetto Bridge – A forgotten record

0
Ponte San Benedetto is one of the most striking bridges in Padua. The structure we see today dates back to 1881, but before its construction there was a curious parenthesis. On 10 August 1828, engineer Anton Claudio Galateo built the first suspension bridge on wire ropes in Italy right here. It was a prodigious artefact that attracted a large crowd of onlookers, and not only on the day of its inauguration. However, the people of Padua did not take care of this innovative work of art and let it rapidly decay, until it was decided to replace it with the bridge we see today.
