San Benedetto del Tronto – The legend of Lu Scijò
The legend of 'Lu Scijò' is an ancient Adriatic legend that gives a face to the unpredictable fury of the sea. Its name is the dialectal form of 'sea whirlwind'. According to the stories of the people of San Benedetto, he personifies this frightening phenomenon that turns into a cyclone of damned souls, ready to punish the sins of man. It all began on a stormy November night many years ago, when a fisherman aboard a fishing boat went mad, cursing the bad weather. Wielding a knife, he tried to decimate the fast-moving cloud mass, dragging men and objects along. The storm moved away. Both the man and the crew members believed in the power of words and gestures as a rescue from certain death. This legend gave rise to the myth of Lu Scijò, the evil being most feared by the fishermen.
