San Pietro in Vincoli cemetery – The secret tunnels of “San Pè dij coj”
What was once known as the "San Pè dij coj" cemetery due to the surrounding cabbage patches, nowadays going by the name of San Pietro in Vincoli, was once the official burial ground for those who fell outside of the Church's grace: suicides, executioners, the unbaptized. This led to the place gradually acquiring a sinister fame, which culminated in 1852 as the graveyard, closed to the public following a devastating explosion, became a favored place for Satanists and assorted occultists who took to practicing their rites in its catacombs. The city's administration tried to stem the problem, but to this day some are still convinced that the reopened cemetery remains a place of esoteric practices, deep within its alleged secret tunnels.
