Sanctuary of Consolation – Isis?
A bizarre theory concerns the legendary painting of the Virgin with Child sheltered within the Sanctuary of Consolation. If you take a careful look at the young woman's painted visage, you'll notice that she doesn't sport the classic Marian features from Byzantine art. Some even went so far as to speculate that the girl isn't Mary at all, but rather Isis bearing the infant Horus. Indeed, one shouldn't forget that the painting was originally lost around the year 1000, when the Egyptian goddess was still actively venerated, and that until the 5th century the church's current site was the location of a pagan temple in the name of "Our Lady". According to the same theory, the "Consolation" in the modern temple's name wouldn't therefore refer to the Virgin Mary, but rather to Isis herself and her grief over Osiris's death.
