The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Prodigio houses a sacred image of the Madonna and Child who is venerated under the title of Our Lady of Prodigy and is considered the patron saint of sailors. The reason? The precious Byzantine effigy is linked to a prodigious event that took place on 12 September 1669 in the Adriatic Sea. A noble family, fleeing from Candia, taken by the Turks, was on its way to Venice when a terrible storm hit its ship. It is said that during the storm, the family saw the sacred picture floating in the middle of the waves. The effigy was fished out and protection was requested. The shipwreck was avoided and from then on the image was considered the protector of sailors.
