Santa Giulia Museum – The Cross of Desire

0
The Museo di Santa Giulia is a place that tells over 3000 years of the city's history. The highlights are the Desiderio Cross (late 8th century), jealously guarded in the upper room of Santa Maria in Solario, the bronze statue of Aphrodite-Victoria (Hellenistic period) and the Choir of the Nuns of the Santa Giulia Monastery with its spectacular 16th century frescoes. The Cross of Desiderius in particular is not only the largest and one of the most valuable and best known Lombard goldsmiths' artefacts in existence, but it is also the early medieval object with the largest number of stones from the Classical period reused in its decoration, about fifty.
