According to centuries-old rumors, the church of Santa Maria in Piazza could be the hiding place of a portrait of the Virgin Mary painted by St. Luke himself, a hypothesis much discussed by historians and critics: if true, it would be the only existing portrait to bear the actual, true-to-life likeness of Mary of Nazareth.
