Santa Maria Maggiore – The astrologist’s curse
The petrified head of a woman, known only as "Berta", juts from the outer wall of Santa Maria Maggiore. According to legend, the head has been there since 1326, when the astrologist Cecco d'Ascoli, sentenced to being burned at the stake, cast a curse upon a local resident who, despite Cecco's pleas for water, denied him respite from his fiery fate.
