Sculptural nativity scene – Towards the Nativity
The travertine nativity scene is placed to protect fishing boats and sailors. The sculpture is located at the second and third sections of the South Pier of San Benedetto del Tronto, close to the water. The Nativity scene was created between 2010 and 2018 by sculptor Giuseppe Straccia, who also created the Monument to the Fallen of Nassirya in the city, a short distance from the city centre. The work revolves around the Nativity of Jesus submerged in the waters off the South Pier. It is crowned by eight sculptural figures in travertine, facing exactly towards the sea and the submerged but visible Nativity on the surface of the water. Their arrangement in a circle was taken directly from Marian devotion. The figures in the crib represent the pluralism and solidarity of the people of San Benedetto.
