The Sanctuary of Our Lady Crowned is famous for its two statues, those of Paciugo and Paciuga. According to legend, Paciugo was a sailor who was captured by Saracen pirates and held hostage for twelve years, during which time Paciuga would go to the sanctuary of Coronata every Saturday to pray. When Paciugo returned, it was a Saturday, and he did not find his wife at home. He asked a neighbour about her, but she lied and told him that she went every Saturday to the shrine to see a man. When he saw his wife again, Paciugo was overcome with jealousy and said nothing, but the next day, while they were in a boat, he killed her by throwing her into the sea. Desperate, he ran to the sanctuary of Coronata to pray, where he found Paciuga running towards him and embracing him. The Virgin had saved her.
