Shrine of Our Lady of Loreto – The legend of the Madonna and Child

0
In the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Loreto there is a votive fresco with an image of the Madonna and Child painted on it. Legend has it that the image of the Madonna was soon greatly venerated by the townspeople following a prodigious event: it seems that, having remained unfinished, in the absence of the painter it was completed by an invisible, divine hand. It is also said that on 21 April 1571, the sacred image moved its eyes towards an adoring and pleading crowd, who had come to pray that a terrible earthquake and a long seismic swarm, which had been shaking the city for several days, would end. The earthquake ceased immediately and the Virgin was also attributed the virtue of protecting the city from earthquakes.
