Source Gaia – The most representative sculpture of the 15th century
The Fonte Gaia, which owes its name to the reaction of the Sienese to the first gushing of its waters, is a work of inestimable artistic value: sculpted by Jacopo dalla Quercia, it is unanimously considered by scholars to be the sculpture that best represents the Italian 15th century. In reality, the Fountain that can be admired today in Piazza del Campo is a copy made in 1844. The original is in fact kept in a loggia of the Palazzo Pubblico. However, the work is magnificently adorned. The bas-relief depicts the creation of Adam and the expulsion from Eden, while the two female statues on either side of the pool represent Rea Silva and Acca Laurenzia. The longest side is also interesting, decorated with a Madonna and Child and an allegory of virtues.
