St Martin’s Cathedral – The prodigies of the Holy Face

0
There are many legends about the prodigies performed by the 'Volto Santo' (another name for the wooden crucifix), kept inside the Cathedral of Lucca. One of the best known is that of a poor jester who came as a pilgrim from France. The poor jester, sorry not to be able to offer even an offering, started playing his lute in front of the sacred image. Pitying him, Christ gave him one of his silver pianelle and dropped it in front of him. Since then, one of the pianelle of the Holy Face has been held by a silver chalice.
