St Paul’s Chamber Museum – One of the Italian Renaissance masterpieces

Correggio was the author of the extraordinary pictorial decoration of what was originally part of the flat of the abbesses of the Benedictine monastery of San Paolo, and is now simply: the Camera di San Paolo. The artist used this architectural space to create the illusion of a pergola with festoons of fruit supported by knots of ribbons. In the centre of the dome is the heraldic emblem of Abbess Giovanna, who commissioned and was responsible for the decorative programme of the room; in the segments are 16 illusionistic ovals opening up to the sky, in the centre of which delicate figures of putti emerge.
