Vittore "Il Moro" (also known as "Mauro") was a soldier of Emperor Massimiano's guard. Vittore was loyal to his Emperor and to every aspect concerning civic life and military discipline but he always refused to recant his Christian faith. He was arrested, threaten to torture and left without food and water for days. He continued to deny sacrifices to the idols even when he was taken to the Circus in the presence of Emperor Massimiano Erculeo and, as a consequence, he underwent terrible suffering. At the end, he was beheaded and his remains were disparsed. The bones of the saint were given to Christians at a later time and they were enshrined in this ancient Basilica. From that moment, the church is dedicated to "San Vittore ad Corpus".
