The Basilica of St. Ambrose – The column of the Devil

0
Just outside the Basilica of St. Ambrose, a Roman Column can be seen on the left side. The legend goes that the Devil wanted to make St. Ambrose, the Bishop of Milano in the 4th century, fall into temptations. Exasperated by the continuous failures, Satan attacked the Saint. However, he missed him and his horns stuck into the column. After several attempts to wrench free, he transformed into sulfur and disappeared. For this reason, according to the tradition, if you go near the holes sulfur can be smelled while if you place your ear there, you can hear the sound of the Stige, the Hell's river. Creepy detail: the area where the Basilica can be found today was a cemetery back in the 4th century.
