The Basilica of St. Eustorgio – The rochet of Cardinal Borromeo

0
Cardinal Carlo Borromeo, who became one of the most well-known saints of Milan, was victim of a bizarre attempt of murder. The Cardinal persecuted the powerful order of "Umiliati" beacause of their excessive craving wealth and, in revenge, one of its members Monk Girolamo Donato, was appointed to kill him as he had access to the Cardinal's house. On the night of October 26, 1569, he entered the house with a small arquebus hidden under the tunic and shot the Cardinal while he was praying in the family chapel. But the bullet hit his surcoat, the rochet, so he was not harmed by the shot. The rochet is preserved and it is displayed in the basilica once a year.
