The bell tower of San Gottardo – The first public clock in history
Azzone Visconti commissioned the construction of the church that was then dedicated to the patron saint of gout, the disease he was suffering from. Then, he ordered to put the first public clock in history on the bell tower and, for this reason in the past, not only the street but the whole neighborhood's name was "delle Ore" ("of hours"). The clock had no visible mechanism so just the ringing could be heard; unfortunately, today there is no trace of it.
