The “Stone of the Insolvent” –

The "Stone of the Insolvent" could be found In the middle of Piazza Mercanti. Debtors had to stand on this stone with buttocks uncovered in order to let everybody know they didn't pay their debts. Today, a Baroque water well made of sandstone is placed where the Stone used to be. This water well was originally located between Palazzo della Ragione and Palazzo dei Giureconsulti, probably in the passageway of Santa Margherita, and it seems to be the only public water well still existing in the city. It is also said that lawyers usually gathered nearby and proverbs in Milanese recalls this habit.
