Tomb of Archimedes – The legend of the schoolgirl
There is a popular legend about the 'Cave of Archimedes' and the surrounding caves. This legend says that in the 19th or early 20th century, a teacher took his pupils to visit these caves until they entered a rather deep cave; from that day on, nothing more was heard of this teacher and his pupils and their bodies were never found. Clearly this is just a popular legend, as the caverns of the Necropolis are shallow, being small catacombs dug into the rock, so the possibility of getting lost in the bowels of Syracuse is practically non-existent.
