Tonnara di Mondello Tower – Defence of the “tonnarotti”

0
The Tonnara di Mondello Tower is a building whose construction seems to date back to 1455. Its function was to defend the houses of the 'tonnarotti', the tuna fishermen who fished and slaughtered the fish, and to protect their warehouses, boats and equipment. In the 15th century, the entire village developed around the tower and a small church dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie, which no longer exists.
