Uffizi Gallery – The “Baldracca”

0
Not everyone knows that the Uffizi Gallery stands on the ruins of an old working-class district of very ill repute. Indeed, when in 1560 Cosimo I de' Medici declared it time for Florence's magistrates to have a unified office building, the area between Piazza della Signoria and the Arno's embankments was known as "Baldracca", after the name of one of its most popular cathouses... where prostitution was the least-dirseputable activity on the premises.
