Ustica Memorial Museum – Around the remains of DC9

Christian Boltanski's permanent installation at the Museo per la Memoria di Ustica in Bologna surrounds the remains of the DC9 that was shot down on 27 June 1980 on its way to Palermo airport. A year after its return to Bologna, the wreckage of the passenger plane is shown in the evocative and evocative setting that the French artist generously and specifically created for the city. The 81 victims of the massacre are remembered through as many lights that turn on and off from the ceiling of the Museum to the rhythm of a breath. Around the reconstructed aircraft, 81 black mirrors reflect the image of those who walk along the gallery, while behind each one 81 loudspeakers emit whispered phrases, common and universal thoughts, underlining the randomness and inevitability of the tragedy.
