Vatican Museums – The Pio Clementine Museum
The Museo Pio Clementino, named after the founders Clement XIV Ganganelli and Pius VI Braschi, was initially created thanks to Pope Julius II's papal collections of classical sculpture, which, in the second half of the 18th century, were increased both through excavations in Rome and Lazio and through acquisitions from collectors or antiquarians. With the Treaty of Tolentino, the Church State was forced to cede the works of the Museum to Napoleon's France, which were transferred to Paris. Later, however, following the Congress of Vienna and thanks to the diplomatic efforts of Antonio Canova, most of the masterpieces were recovered.
